André-Michel is a Professional Engineer based in Alberta, Canada as well as a Certified Reliability Engineer with the American Society for Quality. His academic credentials include an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from École d’Ingénieurs de Marseille, France (1994) and an M.Eng. in Engineering Management from the University of Alberta (2010).

DESCRIPTION:

Reliability Engineering uses a modelling approach specifically known as Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD) in order to evaluate all the characteristics of an asset during its life. The output of this exercise is a dynamic model illustrating different decision-making elements of the asset being studied. This includes economical aspects such as operating costs, spare part management, expected failures and other maintenance outcomes over time. This information allows and operator to correctly budget costs, logistics or labor requirements over the life of the asset. The model also allows the designer to estimate the production output of the asset over time and have a more realistic view of the design output. When it comes to preventive maintenance or redundancy (i.e. adding extra equipment), the model can be altered to visualize the expected output and incremental economical benefits or lack of there off, leading to better decision in terms of capital spending. The author will illustrate the study of a centrifugal pump and help the audience visualize all the above-mentioned aspects.

TOPIC:

Case Study - High Speed Centrifugal Compressor Bearing Failure

  • As a Cat4 vibration expert with over 27 years of experience working with predictive technologies, Daniel brings years of experience to the RATS Technical Sessions.

DESCRIPTION:

Abstract:

In this study, we’ll investigate an incipient bearing failure in the gearbox of a 2000 HP centrifugal gas compressor operating at a speed of 25,000 RPM. The failure was detected through various predictive analyses, which provided substantial evidence justifying the need for inspection and repair of the compressor’s gearbox. Our goal is to minimize production impact while keeping maintenance costs low.

Methods:

To identify the incipient bearing failure, we employed several predictive techniques, including vibration analysis and oil analysis. These methods allowed us to monitor the health of the bearings and detect early signs of deterioration.

RATS Technical Sessions - Pump Vibrations After Repair

TOPIC:

My Pump Was Just Repaired; I Installed It and It Still Has Vibration! Why?

PRESENTER:

  • With over 25 years in the energy service industry, Marlin has worked with petrochemical, oil and gas, mining, transmission and other users of pumps and rotating equipment. His systems thinking approach for adding value and innovative solutions for users and those who support them shapes his approach to the aftermarket. Marlin has evolved his focus on providing a holistic methodology to the evolving needs in the rotating equipment industry and outlook to the future.

When he isn’t working to grow partnerships in business and industry, Marlin can be found skiing, hiking and biking with his family in and around Banff. To connect with Marlin around learning and collaboration, reach out to him on LinkedIn or email at mschulz@hydroinc.com.

DESCRIPTION:

Sometimes we pull equipment because of high vibration, it must be worn out right? So we fix it, then re-install it only to still have the same elevated vibration levels. Why does this happen? In this discussion, Marlin will look back at a unique problem that was encountered on a BB3 style pump with resonance issues after a repair. He will outline what the issue was, how it was diagnosed and some of the possible solutions that could have resolved the issue. This will hopefully provide a foundation for further discussions on why you may not always need to repair equipment just because its vibrating, and what steps might be necessary to properly diagnose “bad actors” before incurring large repair costs.

RATS Technical Sessions - Screw Compressor Package Vibrations

TOPIC:

Solutions to Screw Compressor Package Vibrations

PRESENTERS:

Wally Bratek, P.Eng. - Principal Consultant at Wood in Vibration, Dynamics, and Noise

DESCRIPTION:

Screw compressors are used in industrial applications requiring large volumes of gas at high compression ratios. This rotary-type positive-displacement machine results in a steadier flow compared to reciprocating compressors, however, risks of high-frequency vibration and fatigue failure due to the compression process remain and can be challenging to solve.

This lecture presents a case study involving three oil-flood screw compressor packages in propane service. High vibration on the packages led to excessive noise and failures on small-bore connections. The case study describes the initial measurements of vibration and pulsation, multi-channel shell-mode vibration measurements of the discharge separator vessels and computer simulations of the pulsation and mechanical systems. The data demonstrates how compressor Volume Index (VI) and slide valve position influence pulsation and resonances and quantifies the effects of constrained-layer damping to reduce mechanical vibration. Optimized solutions to reduce the pulsation and vibration will be presented, including field data of the initial and modified systems.

Purchasers and operators of screw compressors can apply the recommendations presented in this case study to minimize the risk of vibration-related failures on screw compressor packages. Relevant API and industry guidelines will also be discussed.

Impact of Torsional Resonance on Lateral Vibration

Presenters:

Dr. Mario Forcinito, Ph.D., P. Eng. - Chief Technical Officer - AP-Dynamics

Description:

AP Dynamics is an international engineering procurement and construction management company specializing in upstream and midstream projects. This presentation will review certain conditions where torsional vibration can cause elevated lateral vibration seen on non-drive train components throughout a package due to lateral-torsional vibration coupling; however, this is often times overlooked as a potential cause during troubleshooting. AP Dynamics is presenting a case study highlighting how reducing elevated torsional vibration on a crankshaft ultimately reduced vibration on components throughout the package.

Technical Session Webinar - Resonance Issues & Solutions

Topic:

Resonance - A Sleeping Giant

Resonance is never an easy problem to deal with-in particular, structural resonance. It’s like a sleeping giant that you never want to awaken.

Presenters:

Kyle Bowlin - Hydro Reliability Services - General Manager

Glen Powell - Hydro Reliability Services - Reliability Engineer

Description:

Resonance is a condition that is often misdiagnosed and commonly goes undiagnosed, resulting in persistent high amplitude vibration issues for long periods. Resonant excitation occurs when a forcing function (generated by rotating equipment) coincides with a structural natural frequency. This problematic occurrence typically results in highly directional vibration and increased amplitudes that can be difficult to resolve without the proper engineering approach.

Resolving structural resonance problems can be quite expensive when trial and error methods are attempted in the field (such as attempting to stiffen or detune a structure). This webinar will focus on ways to identify structural resonance and how to eliminate the high vibration amplitudes that commonly accompany it without the guesswork.

Topic:

Multiphase Pumping – The Role of Multiphase Pumps in the Latter Era of the Oil & Gas Age

Presenters:

Clive Whilde - Rotating Equipment Specialist, SAVIA Consulting

Xavier Gaillard - Multiphase Pump Specialist, Sulzer Pumps

Description:

The comparatively new technology of Helico-Axial Centrifugal Multiphase Pumps is still relatively unknown to many in the Oil & Gas industry. This pumping technology can handle everything that can emerge from a well; boosting oil, water, gas and solids to compensate for the natural decline in well-head pressure which in turn increases production, maintains the parameters of downstream processing plant and increases recovery over the life of the field.

If we consider Oil & Gas Production within the parameters of a greener, more environmentally friendly, lower waste society, then a machine that can extract more oil from an existing field or that can contain and transport hydrocarbons away from environmentally sensitive areas with only a small footprint surely has a more significant place in the industry. As we arrive in the latter stages of the Oil & Gas Age, it’s time to really consider how Multiphase Pumps can make better use of our existing resources for better efficiency of field and deliver a high financial reward compared to investment.

Through the use of existing applications, this seminar will describe the differences between Centrifugal (Helico-Axial) and perhaps the better known Positive Displacement (Twin Screw) machines, their relative strengths, weaknesses and how they can be applied to today’s field conditions.

Technical Sessions Webinar - Gas Turbine Lubricant Maintenance

Topic:

A Paradigm Shift In Gas Turbine Lubricant Maintenance

Presenters:

Peter Dufresne, COO & VP, EPT Clean Oil

Description:

While turbine oil maintenance is recognized as being essential, many programs lack the basic tools to maintain their lubricants within specification. Existing lubricant maintenance is typically reactive in nature and does not target the root cause of many lubricant and mechanical failures: varnish.

This presentation considers a fundamental change in lubricant maintenance focused on improving performance and eliminating common issues for turbine owners. Turbine lubricant maintenance is essential to ensure the performance and reliability of critical rotating equipment. Turbine oil maintenance does not need to be challenging or complex; it simply needs to be effective. If you eliminate the cause of lubricant failures, asset reliability is assured and fluid operating life is extended. If maintenance accomplished both of these, cost savings are exponential.

Treat your turbine lubricant as an asset, not a consumable, and learn how to manage that asset with the right tools.
