RATS Technical Sessions - Pump Vibrations After Repair

  • RATS - Rotating and Turbomachinery Society The District at Beltline - 227 11 Ave SW Calgary, AB, T2R 1R9 Canada (map)

TOPIC:

My Pump Was Just Repaired; I Installed It and It Still Has Vibration! Why?

PRESENTER:

  • With over 25 years in the energy service industry, Marlin has worked with petrochemical, oil and gas, mining, transmission and other users of pumps and rotating equipment. His systems thinking approach for adding value and innovative solutions for users and those who support them shapes his approach to the aftermarket. Marlin has evolved his focus on providing a holistic methodology to the evolving needs in the rotating equipment industry and outlook to the future.

When he isn’t working to grow partnerships in business and industry, Marlin can be found skiing, hiking and biking with his family in and around Banff. To connect with Marlin around learning and collaboration, reach out to him on LinkedIn or email at mschulz@hydroinc.com.

DESCRIPTION:

Sometimes we pull equipment because of high vibration, it must be worn out right? So we fix it, then re-install it only to still have the same elevated vibration levels. Why does this happen? In this discussion, Marlin will look back at a unique problem that was encountered on a BB3 style pump with resonance issues after a repair. He will outline what the issue was, how it was diagnosed and some of the possible solutions that could have resolved the issue. This will hopefully provide a foundation for further discussions on why you may not always need to repair equipment just because its vibrating, and what steps might be necessary to properly diagnose “bad actors” before incurring large repair costs.
