TOPIC:
Laser Weld Technology Applied to Turbomachinery Repairs
-
Martin has been in the Rotating Equipment industry in Alberta for over 15 years, having both technical and sales experience with mechanical seals, pumps, and compressors. He holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Kansas in the USA, and is the Regional Sales Manager for all of Canada for MAN Energy Solutions – PrimeServ Industries group (aftermarket support for turbomachinery).
DESCRIPTION:
Laser welding is a repair method in which a precision laser is used for maintenance and repair of rotors, impellers, and stationary components suffering from wear and corrosion. The technology was first implemented in 2008 by MAN Energy Solutions at our factory in Germany as a superior repair technique over the traditional welding and thermal spray methods. We now have that capability in the Houston area, and will present some details about the technology, and applications.

RATS Technical Sessions - EDM, Jan 2025
TOPIC: Repair of Cast Iron for Rotating Equipment
Cast iron is widely used in industrial rotating equipment due to a combination of properties like strength & durability, damping capability, machinability, corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness. Although cast iron is robust, it is brittle and prone to cracking under impact or thermal stress. Repairs are often necessary when cracks, fractures, or wear occur. In this presentation, we will discuss various repair methods for cast iron.

RATS Technical Sessions - Reliability Analysis of Centrifugal Pumps
TOPIC:
Reliability Analysis of Centrifugal Pumps using Reliability Block Diagrams
PRESENTER:
-
André-Michel Ferrari is a Reliability Engineer who specializes in Reliability Analytics and Modeling which are fundamental to improving asset performance and output in industrial operations. He has approximately 30 years of industrial experience mainly in Reliability Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, and Quality Systems Implementation. His experience includes world-class companies in the Brewing, Semiconductor, and Oil & Gas industries in Africa, Europe and North America.
Throughout his career, André-Michel has strived to provide his customers and peers with practical and effective solutions to improve asset performance, optimize financial spend and improve maintenance strategies. He has published multiple articles on Reliability Engineering Processes and been a regular conference speaker over the last 10 years. He has also mentored countless new engineers and is a passionate contributor to the “Women in STEM” programs.
André-Michel is a Professional Engineer based in Alberta, Canada as well as a Certified Reliability Engineer with the American Society for Quality. His academic credentials include an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from École d’Ingénieurs de Marseille, France (1994) and an M.Eng. in Engineering Management from the University of Alberta (2010).
DESCRIPTION:
Reliability Engineering uses a modelling approach specifically known as Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD) in order to evaluate all the characteristics of an asset during its life. The output of this exercise is a dynamic model illustrating different decision-making elements of the asset being studied. This includes economical aspects such as operating costs, spare part management, expected failures and other maintenance outcomes over time. This information allows and operator to correctly budget costs, logistics or labor requirements over the life of the asset. The model also allows the designer to estimate the production output of the asset over time and have a more realistic view of the design output. When it comes to preventive maintenance or redundancy (i.e. adding extra equipment), the model can be altered to visualize the expected output and incremental economical benefits or lack of there off, leading to better decision in terms of capital spending. The author will illustrate the study of a centrifugal pump and help the audience visualize all the above-mentioned aspects.
